United Township 67, Muchin College Prep 0
After a tough loss on the road to start the season, the United Township Panthers scored early and often in their home opener Friday night, a 67-0 win over Chicago Noble Muchin at the Soule Bowl. The Panthers rolled up six touchdowns in the first quarter on their way to a 40-0 lead after one. That quarter included three Christian Peterson TD passes, to Bandi Diarra (19 yards), Cohen Parsons (14 yards), and Rowan Kallal (4 yards). Isaiah Navarette added scoring runs of 39 and 6 yards, while Jasiah Massey scored from 13 yards out on a reverse play.
In the second quarter, Kenzith Brandom returned an interception 25 yards for a score, and backup QB Johnathan Drake ran in from 28 yards out as time expired, for a 54-0 halftime advantage. The Panthers added two more scores in the fourth quarter, as Drake threw 75 yards to Rowan Sim and accounted for a third touchdown with an 8-yard run.
Peterson finished his night 5-of-7 passing for 72 yards. Navarette totaled 94 yards on just 8 carries.
The Panthers, now 1-1, visit 0-2 Sterling in the Western Big 6 opener next Friday night.
Benet Academy 49, Moline 29
The Moline Maroons played Benet Academy to a 14-14 tie at halftime, but had no answer for Redwings RB Martin Radgowski in the second half and fell 49-29 at Lisle on Friday night. Radgowski had two short TD runs in the first half, but ripped the Maroons’ defense for scoring runs of 58 and 93 yards in the third quarter for a 41-21 advantage heading into the fourth.
Moline got second quarter touchdowns from Adrian Cooper (a 1-yard run) and Chase Marner (a 22-yard pass from Elijah Taylor), both times tying the score. After Taylor threw a pick-six sandwiched between the Radgowski long TD runs, the Maroons got a 4-yard run from Eli Warren to close within 35-21. They also scored on a Drew VandeVoorde 6-yard run in the fourth.
Taylor went all the way at QB for Moline and finished 11-for-17 for 156 yards. Warren caught 4 passes for 58, and led the Maroons rushing attack for the second straight week, with 97 yards on 26 carries.
The Maroons (1-1) head into Western Big 6 play next Friday night with a visit to 2-0 Geneseo.
Dunlap 41, Rock Island 31
The Rock Island offense came alive Friday night, but special teams breakdowns helped Dunlap — a team picked by the Peoria Journal Star to go to the Final Four in Class 6A — outscore the Rocks 27-14 in the second half of a 41-31 Eagles win at Rock Island. Rocks QB Jae’Vion Clark-Pugh was outstanding, throwing touchdown passes of 32 yards to Elijah Venegas, 38 yards to Evan Ellis, and 17 yards to Keyonte Farrow. He finished with 259 yards passing and was named Hungry Hobo Rock Island Rocks Player of the Game.
The Rocks led 17-14 at the half after Jonas Cortez gave them the lead for the third and final time with a 21-yard field goal midway through the second quarter. But Dunlap, who had gained excellent field position with long kickoff returns throughout the first half, returned the second half opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown and a 20-17 advantage. Another score midway through the third made it 27-17.
The Rocks answered with an 84-yard interception return by V Jay Garrard to close within 27-24 at the end of the third. But on the first play of the fourth quarter, Eagles QB John Barger found a wide open Dawson Marmion for a 60-yard TD and a 34-24 lead. Clark-Pugh’s scoring pass to Farrow came with 8:50 remaining and made it 34-31. But the Eagles ground out a 10-play, 55-yard drive, capped off with the final TD with just 2:49 to play.
Temar Hudson led the Rocks’ rushing attack with 62 yards on 16 carries. Leading receivers were Venegas (9 receptions for 86 yards), Ellis (4-62), Farrow (4-58), and Dai’Shaun McCaw (3-40). Four-star recruit Mack Sutter led the Eagles’ attack with six catches for 121 yards. The Rocks (0-2) will travel to Quincy to face the 2-0 Blue Devils next Friday night.
