Week 4 Recap: Bradley-Bourbonnais 49, Rock Island 14

As Rock Island continues to play one state-rated team after another, they had to look for silver linings in a 49-14 loss at Bradley-Bourbonnais in a non-conference contest Friday night.  The Rocks remain winless, while the 9th-ranked (in Class 7A) Boilermakers improved to 4-0.

Trailing just 7-0 after the first quarter, the Rocks gave up three scores in the second, offset only by Jae’Vion Clark-Pugh’s 35-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Venegas.  The only Rock Island score of the second half was a 1-yard TD run by Isaiss Duarte.  The Rocks played turnover-free football, but allowed a 93-yard kickoff return for touchdown.  Offensively, the running game managed an average of just 2.3 yards on 23 carries, and the Rocks were just 3-for-16 on third-down conversions.

Clark-Pugh finished 12-of-23 passing for 121 yards before giving way to backup Myles Duster (1-of-2, 5 yards).  Sophomore WR Evan Ellis led the team with 54 receiving yards on 4 catches.  Venegas added 40 yards on 5 receptions.

Homecoming awaits next Friday, as Rock Island (0-4, 0-1 in Western Big 6 play) welcomes archrival Moline (2-2, 1-1).  Live coverage on QCSportsNet.com is set for 7:00 p.m.

Week 3 Recaps: Moline 51, Geneseo 21

Trailing 21-14 in the second quarter, the Moline Maroons steamrolled Geneseo the rest of the way, taking the lead 24-21 at halftime and scoring 27 more points in the second half for a 51-21 win in the Western Big 6 opener for both teams, Friday night at Bob Reade Field in Geneseo.

The Maroons kept it on the ground, with QB Eli Taylor completing 2-of-3 passes for 33 yards.  But the running game was dominant.  Adrian Cooper totaled 98 yards, including scoring runs of 12 and 39 yards.  He also blocked a field goal that Corbin Schnell returned for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.  Cooper was named the Godfather’s Pizza Moline Maroons Player of the Game.

Also in on the rushing attack:  Schnell, with 2 TDs and 36 yards, Marc Cary, with 49 yards including a 5-yard TD, and Eli Warren, who had 82 yards on just 5 carries before leaving with an injury in the second quarter.

The Maroons went from trailing in the second quarter to being able to pull their starters with 4 minutes remaining in the contest.

Moline (2-1, 1-0 in Western Big 6 play) hosts #9 (in Class 7A) Quincy (3-0, 1-0) next Friday, in the game that figured to be a big factor in deciding the ultimate conference champion.  Geneseo (2-1, 0-1) goes to United Township.

Week 3 Recaps: Sterling 27, United Township 26

For the second time this season, the United Township Panthers suffered a heartbreaking defeat on the road, this time at Sterling, falling 27-26 in the Western Big 6 opener on Friday night.  The Panthers outgained the Golden Warriors, 360 yards to 211, but special teams made all the difference in the game.  Sterling’s Kaedon Phillips opened the scoring with an 80-yard punt return for TD in the first quarter, then did it again, from 42 yards out, to break a tie and put his team in the lead, 27-20, with 6:32 remaining.  The Panthers answered with an 88-yard bomb from QB Christian Peterson to WR Cohen Parsons with 2:29 left, but the extra point kick was blocked, the second extra point UT failed to convert in the game.

Peterson was particularly outstanding for the Panthers.  He completed 16 of his first 17 passes and finished 19-of-25 for 290 yards and three TDs, two of them in the second quarter to RB Isaiah Navarette (40 yards and 9 yards), as UT trailed 17-13 at the half.  Peterson was named the Godfather’s Pizza Panthers Player of the Game.

Navarette compiled 93 yards total, rushing and receiving, while Parsons finished with 4 catches for 116 yards.  For Sterling, Phillips totaled 3 TDs including a 5-yard TD reception from QB Drew Nettleton, who was 9-of-17 for 122 yards, 79 of those to Jimmy Wadsworth on 4 receptions.  Sophomore RB Cobey Shipma carried 16 times for 69 yards.

The Panthers (1-2, 0-1 in WB6) host Geneseo (2-1, 0-1) next Friday, while Sterling (1-2, 1-0) travels to Galesburg (1-2, 0-0).
