Rocky Recap – Week 2

Rock Island showed improvement on both sides of the ball, but suffered its second straight defeat to open the season, 21-7 at Dunlap on Friday night, September 1st.  The Rocks were in a hole early for the second straight week, allowing a 49-yard opening kickoff return, followed by a 41-yard TD run on the first play from scrimmage.  The Rocks lost a fumble at their 2-yard line, leading to another TD and a 14-0 late 1st quarter deficit.  The Eagles’ third score came in the final minute of the 1st, on a 51-yard run, both long TDs by Kendall Netters.  On four other first-half possessions, Dunlap gained negative yards on each one, with the Rocks’ defense coming up with several tackles for loss.

In the second half, the Rocks used their short passing game to engineer an 8-play, 82-yard drive, capped off by Garr Tarr’s 23-yard run to the end zone.  The Rocks’ defense held the Eagles scoreless, including interceptions by Daishaun McCaw and V’Jay Garrard.  Tarr finished with 78 yards rushing on 18 carries, plus a 34-yard pass reception on their TD drive, and was named Hungry Hobo Rock Island Rocks Player of the Game.

The 0-2 Rocks open their Western Big 6 schedule this Friday night against 2-0 Quincy, live on QCSportsNet.com beginning about 7:15 p.m.

Play-by-play announcer lineup gets younger and more athletic

QCSportsNet.com, the play-by-play voice of high school sports in the Quad Cities, begins its tenth season providing professional live coverage of high school football Friday, August 25th.  The network will present live audio play-by-play coverage of all regular season and playoff games involving the Moline Maroons, presented by Sexton Ford, the Rock Island Rocks, presented by Wheelan-Pressly, and the United Township Panthers, presented by Van Hoe Funeral Home.

The announcer roster for this season is skewing younger and more athletic with our latest addition to the varsity.  Our play-by-play lineup (in alphabetical order):

Tristan Daffara – Tristan is in his second season calling play-by-play for QCSportsNet and is a graduate of the Western Illinois University broadcasting program.

Grant Dahlstrom – Grant is an 8th grade student and multi-sport athlete at John Deere Middle School who has live sports reporting experience with WQAD-TV covering the John Deere Classic and has honed his craft with numerous online play-by-play broadcasts.  The future Maroon will be the primary announcer for Moline games.

Ken Jacoby – Ken is beginning his 12th season as the primary announcer of Rock Island Rocks games.  The owner of QCSportsNet, Ken is the proud dad of two Rocky grads and a senior at RIHS.

Joe Winkel – Joe is in his 10th season with QCSportsNet and has been calling United Township play-by-play since he was a student there.  Fresh off the record-breaking listenership to his call of the Moline Boys Basketball state championship, he will once again be the UT Panthers’ primary football announcer.

Live play-by-play of Quad City Storm adds all 7 road games vs. Peoria Rivermen

QCSportsNet.com, the play-by-play voice of Quad City Storm professional hockey, is adding regular season road games to its schedule, with all seven visits to the archrival Peoria Rivermen receiving live coverage.  Heading into its third season of live Storm play-by-play, QCSportsNet will again carry all 28 home games live, in addition to all home and away playoff contests.

For businesses who sponsor the live broadcasts, this is an added bonus.  The already affordable advertising rates are not increasing at all, even with the addition of seven road games against the Storm’s most popular opponent.  Fans can hear all broadcasts on QCSportsNet.com’s dedicated Storm channel.  For home games, fans can listen to the live play-by-play at Vibrant Arena at The Mark:

*  In their seats on 100.1 FM
*  In suites and restrooms, along with live video
*  Via speakers on the smoking decks and around the concourse
*  When not attending, on the subscription service HockeyTV

Veteran central Illinois TV and radio broadcaster Marc Strauss will call the play-by-play of the games at Peoria.  Marc spent 32 years with WEEK-TV 25 in Peoria, and more recently has called play-by-play sports for WJBC Radio in Bloomington-Normal, and since 2022 has been the primary play by play voice for Prairie Central High School basketball on Fairbury News, and calls high school football for Fairbury News and Route 24 Radio in central Illinois.

Home games will feature the return of QCSportsNet’s top-notch rotation from last season, including former Mallards play-by-play announcer Ken Jacoby, longtime hockey (and other sports) broadcaster Greg Halbleib, and Joe Winkel, who has been a QCSportsNet announcer since its inception.

Opening night will be Friday, October 21st, at Vibrant Arena at The Mark against the Rivermen.  The live broadcast gets underway at 7:00 p.m., with the opening faceoff at 7:10 p.m.  The first game at Peoria is Friday, November 3rd.
